June 4th 2010 - Crew member of Scalett Lucy a recipient of the 2010 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery

Fourth engineer James Fanifua of MV Scarlett Lucy has been nominated by Australia, as the recipient of the 2010 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea.

Engineer Fanifua played a pivital role in the dramatic rescue of two survivors from the sunken yacht Sumatra 11, in May 2009 during severe weather conditions in the Tasman Sea. The assessing panel from the IMO stated that "Mr Fanifua placed himself in great danger. Exhibiting little regard for his own personal safety, he went over the side of his ship, into very rough seas, to pull the exhausted man from the water and carry him to the safety of the ship. The panel was of the view that Engineer Fanifua displayed extraordinary bravery and humanitarian concern and had gone far beyond the call of duty, in putting his own life at risk."

Commendations from all at Neptune.

This video shows the dramatic rescue of the two men. With the survivors safely on board, the crew of the MV Scarlett Lucy continued on route to Sydney where they berthed early Sunday morning, May 24th.
